I resemble my father.  Well, that’s what people say.  I am a college bound
student with dreams of becoming a Psychologist.  My dad was killed when I
was 2 years old.  He was in the Army National Guard & was killed a day
before his 24th birthday.  Mom was 6 weeks pregnant with my sister.  I
remember nothing about this time
-frame.  I hear stories all the time but
nothing brings a person alive.  My dad was fun-loving, well-liked & very
intelligent.  I have a plethora of pictures.  Mom tried her best to keep him
alive to me & my sister as long as possible.

During my research of various scholarship opportunities, I found out there
weren't any scholarship money available for deceased veteran's
dependents if they died outside of combat.  Mom made several calls seeking
opportunities from the state as well as other outside organizations.  I was
disappointed discovering there was no money available for me.  Thoughts
race through my mind because I knew that my father couldn't be the only
man that has ever died outside of active duty.  My dad joined the military to
contribute & support this country.  He was willing to fight & die for this
country in combat and because he didn't die in active duty; I get penalized.
That just didn't sit well with me.

Mom & I had been driving to various colleges & visiting their campuses while
driving also discussing college tuition & scholarships.   I thought of my
sister who has never met our dad.  My heart goes out to children that has
lost a parent or both parents.  I told my mom right then, that there has to be a
way to help other people in my situation.   I thought if other people can raise
money for scholarships; why can't I.

I will be the first to graduate in my family.  I am determined that nothing will
stop me.  My dream & the mission of Forgotten Dependents is to help others
defray the cost of education for their family as well.  If children really are our
future, let's put it into action.
